Pole docks are designed for shallow water installations, typically in water depths of less than 6 feet. Because very little of a pole dock touches the water, this dock style is one of the most environmentally friendly options available and performs exceptionally well in rough water conditions. A pole dock is also the most cost-effective docking solution, as it requires minimal shoreline preparation and features a lightweight aluminum pole dock design that is easy to assemble and remove. Reduced installation effort means fewer crew requirements and easier seasonal handling. Your kids will thank you!
- Suitable for water depths up to 6ft. In general you want the width of the dock to be greater than the depth of the water to ensure stability
- Dock is extremely stable
- Lake bed should be reasonably firm, for mucky lake beds concrete pads can be put down for support
- Does not need to be attached to shoreline
- Life expectancy of frame is 30+ years
Choosing a Pole Dock Size
Most Pole Docks are chosen based on water depth. How long does your dock need to be to get to water that is deep enough to swim, or dock your boat?
Choosing a width depends on how you plan to use the dock. A wide dock will be more stable in deeper water and also provides additional space for entertaining and relaxing.
Pole Docks are available in two styles:
Choosing the Right Pole Dock Layout
Most pole docks are selected based on how far they must extend to reach safe swimming depth or boat access. Width should generally exceed water depth to maximize stability. Common pipe dock layouts include:
Winterizing Your Pole Dock
Pole docks are vulnerable to ice damage and should always be removed for the winter. Our pole docks are designed with removable decking and light weight aluminum frames to make this as easy as possible. All but the biggest of our dock frames can be easily carried by 2 people. The smallest frames require only 1.
Dock Installation
Pole docks are among the easiest dock systems to install. They typically do not require attachment to the shoreline unless the area experiences heavy wave action. The ramp can rest directly on shore, while each dock frame stands on adjustable aluminum pole legs and connects to the previous section.
Deck panels are fastened in place once the frames are fully assembled. Installation is straightforward for most clients, though many choose professional installation the first time and handle maintenance and seasonal adjustments themselves afterward.
Frequently Asked Questions
Pole docks are most appropriate for use in shallow water, i.e., water that does not exceed 6 feet in depth. They can be used when the lake bed is firm and offer excellent stability when properly sized and installed.
Yes. Since very little of the dock is in the water, the pole dock is the most environmentally friendly dock available.
In most cases, pole docks do not have to be secured to the shoreline. However, their legs are adjustable for stability, although securing them to the shoreline may be advised for areas with high wave activity.
Pole docks are also relatively simple for homeowners to set up because they are made of lightweight aluminum. However, some clients want professionals to set them up for the first time and then take over maintenance themselves.
Yes. Pole docks should always be removed before winter to prevent ice damage. Their lightweight aluminum frames and removable decking make seasonal removal easier compared to heavier dock systems.
